My Food Perspective

 Nutrition with an AWESOME mind

Number one: wear your ‘awesome” glasses and filter everything you read through the awesome part of your mind. Yes, that liberal, uber colorful part, that is in sync with your body, follows your heart and examines e-ve-ry-thing through a holistic approach. Number two: open your eyes wide, shut your ears and focus. How do we, awesome people see food & nutrition?

Awesome Principles

  • Nutrition is a secondary source of energy

Primary foods, or nonfood sources of nourishment, are what really fuel us. As children, we all lived on primary food. They go beyond the plate, nurturing us on a deeper level.

Primary food checklist:

  • Healthy relationships
  • Regular exercise
  • Fulfilling career
  • Spiritual practice

The more primary food we give ourselves, the less we depend on secondary food. On the contrary, the more we feed ourselves with secondary food, the less space we leave for primary food – our true source of nourishment.

  • Diet is a lifestyle

I can’t state it simpler. Lifestyle and diet are interconnected. People are striving to eat the healthiest they could but mostly fail. Why is that?? Do you know anyone whose day to day life is perfect?? Hell no!! Restrictions and extremes don’t work for long. Listening to your body, though, does.

  • Get in tune with your body

No one knows better than you how a type of food affects you. Hey sista, bottom line, you are an animal. Animals follow their gut. So follow your and solely your wants and needs. People have the need to categorize themselves and others (e.g. “What are you? vegetarian? Gluten Free?” etc). And it’s this labeling that creates an unnecessary sense of pressure and close-mindedness. So listen to your body and get in tune with yourself.

  • One person’s food is another person’s poison

Food must be about the individual and not the theory… You know better than everyone what works for you. A Ben & Jerry’s ice cream which is a comfort food for you might be a dynamite for your bestie’s system. That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t have that whole pint if you feel like it. If you eat it and it works for you then the conversation is over. I need to trust my own cravings. Like I said, we are just like all animals. We have outsmarted ourselves because of the development of the brain. But the place we need to look when we don’t know what to eat is inside our heart. Take enough time to understand what the body wants, prefers and assimilates better.

  • Do everything in MO DE RA TI ON

The awesome team, as well as The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) supports the idea of eating certain foods in moderation. That means it’s acceptable to eat something that isn’t good for you as long as you only eat a small amount and not very often. Don’t Focus on Each Food as Being Totally Good or Bad

  • Awesome nutrition is the Post-modern nutrition
    • Modern nutrition (so 2008!!): nutritionists tell you exactly what you should be eating
    • Post-modern nutrition: takes what modern nutrition says, and has greater congruity in the way of the theories’ application to each person. Not one theory works for anyone and anytime. What you eat has to do with your gender, your origins, your lifestyle, your career, your mental balance at this specific time of your life.

Seriously guys, if you approach food through the above parameters, you will solve all your nutrition-related problems you have had as of now. Most of the people I know, including myself, have struggled at some point in their life with food. Let’s make our lives easier my loves!! La vie est tres belle…
